Roles: Cambridge City Council, Mayor, Attorney

Tell me a little about where you grew up?

My family immigrated to the United States from Pakistan when I was two. We were able to move to Cambridge because of affordable housing. I grew up in Rindge Towers, now known as the Fresh Pond Apartments, and later Roosevelt Towers through the Cambridge Housing Authority.

How did that experience shape you as a person?

Growing up in the Rindge Towers in Cambridge meant growing up in a diverse and vibrant community, and shaped who I am to this day. Growing up in affordable housing allowed me to live in a city with many resources and high quality public education. It gave my parents access to employment opportunities, and it gave me access to the city I love and have called home for over three decades.

Why is that housing important now?

I am dedicated to preserving and growing our affordable housing stock in Cambridge because it changed the course of my life and I know that every unit will have a similar impact on another family.
